Lyrics

We came at Dawn

We came at dawn by Glymir River's grey and muddled shores
A fleet of longships, sails which fluttered slowly to the thug of oars
And bearded men with scars and bruises leaning hard against the stream
Whose efforts stretched itself to reach a long lost, golden dream
To settle township by the rocky waterfall of might
When crowded enemies, the swedish lords with pikemen, bowmen light
And danes of axe and swords
Unabled were to find the low legged water fords to safely cross with horseback hoards

I was the leader of this ragged band of silent, tired men
From guardian times of emperors in Hellespontens Miklagardh, and then
Through baptized heads in France Rouen
We sailed by starlight, reached our northern shores again
To settle east of Folden
The times were made for kingdom come, and not so very told then
And village huts were built anew with scent of mead and pork and rum
And steel-forged knives and kettle drum
Took place among the gardens of the tasty cherry plum

Our ships did plow the ocean with fierce dragon heads in front
We reached the Norway coast in one, two struggling winter months
Those were the days when men did die
In purple rain on foreign grounds
And pyres crackled all lost souls into a black and somber sky
When shadow gods did guide the flock into the Hall of Death with lightning thunder sounds

Livestock are slaughtered, relatives die
Oneself disappears as morning stars in the sky
But the word of good men always will stay
If you win a true goodwill before the end of the day
So I know just one thought that never will die
The judgment with the dead under the rye
Springtime returns; summer, autumn and winter goes on
Oneself sails the rivers of time that flows on

We came at dawn in summer's feast, and thousand years of craft have since then gone
When first our men and women in the earthen Borgian fortress set upon
The task to raise a port, a hamlet with a weapon smith and church
Reverberating winds of peace and war in autumn shadowlands and snow white winter perch
Around our castle walls in dynasties of mice and men
To gaze rebirthment on the sailing birch again

Until that day when all our paths are covered by the green walk moss of time
And we as warriors and penciled skykings had to settle down to write in solitude the final rhyme
With Sigvat Skald and Skallagrim the Grey, a drip of centuries of life in tribute to our skill
To stretch and build our history
Become the marksmen of the Hell and Heavens magnitude of earthbound Kings men's will
